Because I don’t have children, I never quite understood why back-to-school season was so stressful for parents.

I thought it couldn’t be THAT bad; after all, you only need to buy 2 or 3 notebooks, some erasers, a couple t-shirts, a SpongeBob SquarePants lunch box, and make sure the kids arrive at the bus stop on time, right?

I was so naive. By listening to people around me and opening myself up to a routine I’ve yet to experience, I understood how much back-to-school meant for parents and I wanted to help by giving them a healthy breakfast idea. And that’s how my make-ahead homemade oatmeal recipes were born. They keep for a long time and preparing them is a fun family activity. You can even let the kids draw on the bags or label them with each new flavour.

I am truly convinced they’ll be very proud to “cook” their own breakfast by pouring the mix into a bowl, stirring it with milk and heating the oatmeal in the microwave for a minute.

Banana & chocolate
  • 1/2 cup quick rolled oats
  • 3 teaspoons brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons cocoa powder
  • 1 banana, sliced, for serving
  • 3/4 cup vanilla almond milk, for serving
Dates & almonds
  • 1/2 cup quick rolled oats
  • 3 teaspoons brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons powdered almonds
  • 1/4 cup slivered almonds
  • 1/4 cup Medjool dates, diced
  • 3/4 cup vanilla almond milk, for serving
Nuts, figs & cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup quick rolled oats
  • 3 teaspoons brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon chia seeds
  • 1/4 cup figs
  • 1/4 cup pecans, roughly chopped
  • 3/4 cup vanilla almond milk, for serving

Steps

  1. Place the ingredients for your chosen flavour in a plastic bag (except for the milk and banana in the « Banana & Chocolate » mix).
  2. Write the flavour on the bag.
  3. To serve, simply pour the contents of the bag into a small bowl, add almond milk, and cook in the microwave for 2–3 minutes, or until the milk has been absorbed.

Tips & tricks

You can also make this recipe with dairy or soy milk.

The oatmeal will stay fresh until the expiration dates of the other ingredients.
